We just took the first big step in building our home. We poured the footers! According to my husband, this is the most crucial step, as it will hold the foundation of our house. My husband and his cousin dug our basement then the footers. This involved excavating equipment and flour; yeap, the kind you bake with. They “chalked” the footer lines and used that as a guide for the excavator bucket. Clive’s cousin is an exceptional equipment operator; it’s almost like he dances the machines. It’s very interesting to watch.
Once the footers were dug Clive prepped them with rebar. This isn’t required by code because we aren’t at a high wind elevation, but Clive added the rebar because he wanted to make our foundation as strong as possible. Fun fact, our 8 year old son helped torch and bend the steel for our footers!
We passed our footer inspection so it was time to line up cement trucks. Our square footage will be 1660 on a basement so we had 15 yards of concrete poured. With the help of some family members, the cement was troweled down so they were level. No cement job is complete without a few hand and puppy paw prints. Now we are ready for basement walls!
