Stop buying Zinnia seeds, and start saving them! You can harvest seeds from your Zinnia plants each year to save or share. If you’ve never saved flower seeds before, Zinnias are a great place to start. If you are new to gardening, check out my gardening essentials HERE.
How To Save Zinnia Seeds
Start by letting your Zinnias bring you joy by blooming. After they have bloomed, they will start to die. It’s best to harvest seeds from Zinnias that have not been cut and put in a vase. Locate Zinnias that have bloomed and are starting to turn brown. The petals should be dried out, and not still full of color. You can cut the entire plant, or just harvest the bloom part. I like to use a pair of snippers and just remove the head. Then comes the fun part. You can gently pull each petal, and attached to each end it will a shield shaped seed! If you run out of petals start gently pulling the head of the Zinnia apart. There will be loads of seed in each head. I like to spread my seeds out on a tray or paper towel to ensure they are completely dry. Once they are 100% dry, I add them to a seed envelope. Now you are ready to plant Zinnias for the next season, or to share as a gift. Happy planting!
